Our Mission

To preserve the environment and biodiversity in the archipelago by implementing solutions that ensures the protection and sustainable use of marine resources. Promote knowledge of marine science and related social topics within the people that live in Los Roques, in pro of community awareness and participation of knowledge and maintenance of the environment. FCLR Summary

The Los Roques Scientific Foundation, have been working in Los Roques Archipelago National Park since 1963 (long before the area were declared National Park in 1972). The park has an area of 1500 square kilometers and is located at north of La Guaira (200 km from Caracas). The Archipelago is one of the four best preserved ecosystems in the Atlantic Ocean. Its high species diversity includes: 92 birds, 307 fishes, 4 marine turtles, 57 corals, 60 sponges, 108 crabs, 84 shrimps, 130 algae, 4 mangrove and 3 sea grass species.

Our work is summarized in: 103 scientific publications, 16 technical reports, 56 thesis, 17 courses, 28 publications in non scientific publications, 5 brochures and 6 videos.

Program monitoring health status of coral reefs PNALR the threat of global warming (Programa de monitoreo de la condición de salud de los arrecifes de coral del PNALR ante la amenaza del calentamiento global)

Los Roques archipelago is the largest reef system in Venezuela and one of four best-preserved reefs in the Caribbean. Due to increased water temperature, the effect of climate change over the past 20 years has seen as a significant loss of coral populations in the world. FCLR investigators have observed over the last decade a deteriorating health status of many species of corals and reef organisms.

In order to determine the local and global factors are responsible for the loss of coral health of Los Roques Archipelago National Park, Dr. Estrella Villamizar (UCV, FCLR) team´s is conducting a long-term monitoring at fixed stations, representative the study area. During 5 years, biologists will make 5 annual expeditions to monitor the onset and progression of bleaching, the recovery of affected areas and to take small samples of coral to assess the concentration of zooxanthellae in the tissue (this is an indicator the extent of coral bleaching).

This information will determine the appropriate policies and measures to be taken by the authorities to preserve the reefs. (See the article, in Spanish)(see the artilce, in spanish)

Educational Program

With the support of the scientific community and researchers associated with FCLR, we have conducted workshops and lectures to students of the School of El Gran Roque, to adults of the Missions Rivas, Sucre and Robinson and the general community during the implementation of the Environmental Education Program. This program is conducted by Los Roques Scientific Foundation, coordinated by Blanca Elena Machado. Soon, we will publish the results of the 2008-2009 school years. A summary could be read here (In Spanish)
